More info

The Leadshine 86HSM80-E1 with CL86C Driver is a high-torque closed-loop stepper motor system designed for CNC routers, engraving machines, cutting equipment, automation systems, and other applications that require accurate positioning with strong torque.

The system combines a NEMA 34 size 86HSM80-E1 motor with an integrated encoder and Leadshine CL86C closed-loop stepper driver. Encoder feedback allows the driver to monitor the actual motor position and respond to positioning errors, significantly reducing the risk of lost steps compared with conventional open-loop stepper systems.

With 8Nm holding torque, a 14mm keyed shaft, 1000 CPR encoder, and an included 8m feedback cable, this set is particularly suitable for larger CNC axes and industrial motion applications where reliability, positioning accuracy, and smooth operation are important.

Key Features

  • Genuine Leadshine closed-loop stepper motor and driver system

  • NEMA 34 / 86mm frame motor

  • 8Nm holding torque

  • 14mm keyed motor shaft

  • Built-in 1000 CPR encoder for position feedback

  • Leadshine CL86C closed-loop stepper driver

  • Up to 8A adjustable driver output current

  • Includes 8m encoder / feedback cable

Closed-Loop Position Control

Unlike a conventional open-loop stepper system, the 86HSM80-E1 continuously provides position feedback to the CL86C driver through its encoder.

The driver compares the commanded position with the actual motor position, helping detect positioning errors and reducing the possibility of unnoticed lost steps.

This makes the system useful for CNC and automation applications where position reliability is important, especially during rapid acceleration, higher-speed movement, or changing mechanical loads.

Powerful 8Nm NEMA 34 Motor

The 86HSM80-E1 provides 8Nm holding torque, making it suitable for demanding machine axes that require considerably more torque than typical NEMA 23 stepper systems.

The 86mm NEMA 34 frame and 14mm keyed output shaft make it suitable for connection to compatible couplings, pulleys, belt drives, gear systems, and ball screw assemblies.

Typical applications include CNC router X/Y axes, larger Z-axis systems, engraving machines, cutting machines, and automation equipment.

1000 CPR Encoder Feedback

The motor includes a 1000 CPR encoder that provides position feedback to the closed-loop driver.

Encoder feedback allows the CL86C to monitor motor movement and identify excessive tracking error. If the motor cannot follow the commanded movement because of overload, mechanical obstruction, or another problem, the driver can generate an alarm instead of allowing the machine to continue operating with an unknown positional error.

Leadshine CL86C Closed Loop Driver

The included CL86C is designed for 86-series closed-loop stepper motors and combines stepper simplicity with feedback-based motion control.

It supports adjustable output current from 0 to 8A and accepts standard pulse and direction control signals, making it suitable for many CNC controllers, motion control cards, PLC systems, and industrial control setups.

The driver supports pulse input frequencies up to 500kHz for high-speed motion control applications.

Reduced Vibration and Motor Heating

Closed-loop control allows the driver to manage motor operation more efficiently according to actual movement and load conditions.

Compared with traditional open-loop stepper systems, the closed-loop system can provide smoother operation, reduced vibration, lower unnecessary motor heating, and improved high-speed performance when correctly configured.

These characteristics are particularly useful for CNC machines where smoother motion can contribute to better machining results.

Flexible Electronic Gearing and Microstep Settings

The CL86C supports electronic gearing / subdivision settings from 200 to 51200 steps per revolution.

Common selectable settings include:

  • 800 steps/rev

  • 1000 steps/rev

  • 1600 steps/rev

  • 2000 steps/rev

  • 3200 steps/rev

  • 4000 steps/rev

  • 5000 steps/rev

  • 6400 steps/rev

  • 8000 steps/rev

  • 12800 steps/rev

  • 25600 steps/rev

  • 51200 steps/rev

This allows the system to be configured according to the CNC controller, mechanical transmission, required resolution, and machine speed.

Wide Driver Power Supply Range

The CL86C supports:

  • 20–70VAC input

  • 30–70VDC input

Using a correctly selected higher-voltage power supply can help improve motor performance at higher rotational speeds, while the current and voltage must always remain within the driver's specified operating limits.

Built-In Protection and Alarm Functions

The CL86C includes protection and monitoring functions designed to improve system reliability.

Protection functions include:

  • Overcurrent protection

  • Overvoltage protection

  • Tracking error protection

  • Motor lock / stall error detection

  • Motor parameter auto-tuning error detection

  • Internal fault monitoring

The driver also provides an alarm output that can be connected to a CNC controller or machine control system where supported.

5V and 24V Control Signal Support

The CL86C supports pulse and direction control signal levels of 5V or 24V through a selectable input setting.

This provides compatibility with a wide range of CNC controllers, PLCs, breakout boards, and motion controllers.

The correct signal voltage setting must be selected before operation to avoid damaging the driver input circuit.

8m Encoder Feedback Cable

This package includes an 8m encoder / feedback cable, providing more installation flexibility for larger CNC machines and control cabinets.

The cable carries the encoder feedback signals between the motor and CL86C driver, allowing the driver to continuously monitor motor position.

Installation Note

The CL86C requires a suitable external AC or DC power supply and should be installed with adequate ventilation. Leadshine recommends mounting the driver vertically to improve natural airflow, with additional forced-air cooling where required.

Correct motor phase and encoder wiring are essential for closed-loop operation. Incorrect wiring or incorrect 5V/24V input selection can cause driver faults or hardware damage. Electrical installation and machine commissioning should be performed by someone familiar with CNC motion-control systems.
